The rest of what I wrote didn't survive by the looks of it. Remember that I am a white Australian, but as a retired teacher, I regard literacy of all kinds to be essential for everyone to make progress. Saying that, I'd like to see (here too) people sharing skills with youth (and anyone older if they wish). I don't see why educated white people can't spend time on a regular basis tutoring children, visiting hospitals to read to kids, and so on. Pie in the sky, I suspect you may think. The fear is that this help will come across as condescending, which is the last thing I want. I don't see why businesses can't take in Black youth to teach them how the business works and what is possible for them: to encourage youth to know that they can do it too. What do you think? Idealism on steroids?
